The Resource Recovery Center operates a purge well system on and in the vicinity of the former Whitehall Wastewater Treatment Plant, which was operated by Muskegon County in Whitehall Township from 1972 to 2003. The purpose of the purge well system is to prevent the migration of ground water from the former treatment plant. The Resource Recovery Center is under an order from the State of Michigan to keep the purge well system operational. The system is about 38 years old and requires a major refurbishment to keep it working properly.
