The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is a leader in utilizing advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology and smart infrastructure for accurate and reliable traffic data collection. Previously, CDOT's vehicle classification sites required significant maintenance due to the short lifespan of piezo sensors. Each lane utilized one piezo sensor alongside two loop sensors. To address this issue and enhance its traffic monitoring program, CDOT adopted the VSign Smart Vehicle Classification System – an Artificial Intelligence and cloud-based solution offering unmatched performance and features. The VSign system utilizes the existing single or double loop sensors to classify vehicles and measure vehicles' speed under various traffic conditions based on Inductive Loop Signature Technology (i-LST) and AI technologies. By eliminating the need for high-calibration, short-lifespan piezo sensors, VSign reduces the burden of frequent sensor maintenance for CDOT. Additionally, VSign provides loop sensor and solar/battery health monitoring, giving CDOT valuable insights into the operation and maintenance of the VSign system itself.
