IFB 25-105 NM - DTD Post-Wildfire Debris Flow Research

This Contract is for addressing post-wildfire debris-flow issues. The following outcomes shall be achieved:

1. Tailor and build upon the existing dynamic GIS-based burned-index map of burned areas correlated with transportation infrastructure that would be impacted by debris flow to meet the needs of pooled-fund member states as detailed in the tasks below.
2. Determine the post-wildfire debris flow behaviors/characteristics that affect transportation infrastructure in diverse parts of the Western United States through the surveying of precipitation patterns that trigger the events that have triggered the post-wildfire debris flow, soil types and subsurface conditions, and availability of outlets in the affected areas.
3. Develop a compendium of existing tools currently in use (or in development) amongst the member states of this proposal that are used to predict the potential of debris flow.
4. Develop a compendium of remediation approaches that can be applied to burned areas, depending on the situation (e.g. the USFS BAER Catalog).
5. Provide guidelines on the use of the tools and approaches compiled in the above-mentioned compendiums.
6. Address some of the existing data gaps in current research on this issue on this issue via extensive literature review, and recommend directions forward on potential research proposals to address these existing gaps.
