Summary of Specifications:
The City of Durango (the City) is planning to conduct a thinning project on the Twin Buttes Open Space parcel, which is Phase II of the overall Twin Buttes Fuel Reduction Project. Phase II of the Twin Buttes Fuel Reduction Project (the project) involves thinning trees and shrubs, to create a 50-acre shaded fuel break on the southern boundary of Twin Buttes Open Space (Access Map). A shaded fuel break is an easily accessible strip of land of varying width (depending of fuel and terrain), in which fuel density is reduced, thus improving fire control opportunities. This shaded fuel break project will involve thinning trees and shrubs, pruning remaining trees, removing dead wood from the forest floor, and creating an open park-like appearance. This project is funded by a 2011 Community Wildland Fire Assistance Cooperative Agreement Grant provided through the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and Emergency Supplemental Funding through the Colorado State Forest Service (CSFS). A forester with Ecosphere Environmental Services (Ecosphere) will be overseeing the contractor in the field on behalf of the City, as well as working with the BLM and CSFS throughout the project.
