Description

The City of Colorado Springs was awarded an SS4A Demonstration Grant to determine effectiveness in improving safety using the following five different types of pilot projects:
• Neighborhood Traffic Circles
• Raised Crosswalks
• Speed Activated Flashing Warning Signs
• Speed Activated School Zone Signs
• Protected Bicycle Lanes
Each type of countermeasure list above has several installations throughout the City, totaling 27 pilot projects. The intent is to collect (before) data at each site prior to the installation to determine the existing conditions. Data collected will be based on appropriate measures of effectiveness for each type of countermeasure, but may include speed, volumes, crash history,
bicycle level of stress, and potentially other data deemed necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of the countermeasure. After several months of installation, similar after data will be collected at each project site. An analysis of the identified measures of effectiveness for the before and after periods will be performed to determine the effectiveness of the countermeasures. This information will be used to help determine projects that the City would like to pursue for an SS4A Implementation Grant.
