On December 15th, 2021, the City of Colorado Springs experienced near city-wide damage to its urban forest in the manner of uprooted, large diameter trees. The trunks and branches have been removed, but many root plates remain to be disposed of and their cavities backfilled.
The “root plates”, or root systems with soil and rock debris embedded, are often still attached to unbroken roots underground, can be large and unwieldy, and will leave soil cavities in the landscape when removed.
