Specifications include, but are not limited to: The medical examination report includes the physical exam, eye exam, hearing exam, pulmonary function testing, occupational health screening, and laboratory tests to detect conditions which could adversely affect the applicant’s ability to safely perform all essential job tasks under emergency and combative conditions. The laboratory tests include hemoglobin, urinalysis (UA) dip, and drug screening. Vision Standard The State Patrol visual acuity requirements are 20-100 uncorrected, correctable to 20-20 with glasses, hard contacts or soft contacts. Any applicant having vision correction surgery must have had surgery a minimum of six months prior to the start of the academy and must provide written medical verification and documentation at the time of the examination that no complications exist. Must be able to distinguish colors. Peripheral vision – 85% of the normal peripheral range of 160 degrees when viewing with both eyes. Ability to pass 40% stereopsis (depth perception) or better. An applicant is disqualified if there is: Loss of either eye Chronic inflammation of the lids Permanent abnormalities of the eye(s) Hearing Standard Hearing assessment by an Audiogram is required as part of the medical evaluation. Any applicants requiring or using hearing aids will need to bring in documentation from a licensed audiologist showing corrected hearing meets requirements of: not have more than a 35db loss in either ear when averaging the loss at 500, 1000, 2000 and 3000hz. Occupational Health Screening Determine the candidate has the range of motion and motor skills needed to perform the duties on the job description (Appendix 1). Medical staff will make a determination on the ability of the applicant to participate in a treadmill fitness test (there may be a cardiac risk factor that will require the applicant to be referred to their own physician at their own expense for the treadmill fitness test.) Laboratory Testing Lab tests that must be performed and documented are: hemoglobin, UA dip, and drug screen. A Medical Review Officer (MRO) must oversee the drug screening chain of custody process and review all drug screening results (Appendix 3 Certified Laboratory form). A Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) certified laboratory must be used.
