Specifications include, but are not limited to: The Pegasus Toroidal Experiment requires design and fabrication of a new, modular, MW-class DC/DC converter power switching unit to provide active control of programmable current to drive high-power electron current sources (helicity injectors) for magnetic fusion research. The output of multiple instances of the desired power switching module will be combined in appropriate parallel/series combinations to drive the injectors. The helicity injectors typically provide several kA currents at kV voltages, with an effective load impedance of ~50–250 m. The DC/DC converters are to be operated in a pulsed mode, with pulses lasting 25–50 ms. The power switching unit’s current or voltage output should be time variable through user-provided active feedback control switch modulation signals. Energy sources for the switching units will be user-provided electrolytic capacitor banks at a nominal 450 V.
