Specifications include, but are not limited to: Treatment and Herbicide Chemical Requirements Below are the chemical requirements for chemically treating in 2020 and 2021. Foliar Treatment: The Contractor will conduct foliar herbicide applications to all buckthorn plants (new growth, re-sprouts) present after the Department’s previous cut-stump treatment efforts. Buckthorn plants will be treated with an aquatic approved herbicide including the chemical triclopyr and methylated seed oil. This solution will be applied to foliage of buckthorn species using a backpack or hand sprayer. Triclopyr & methylated seed oil mix: The Department of Natural Resources recommends the use of triclopyr mixed with methylated seed oil (MSO) and an appropriate dye for foliar treatment. In any aquatic environment, approved aquatic formulas of triclopyr, MSO, and dye must be used. Herbicide concentrations can vary from 4-7% in a mixed solution. The lowest effective dose should be used in all circumstances. Cut-stump Treatment: The Contractor will cut and drop buckthorn plants (≥1/4” diameter) using a combination of chainsaws, brush-cutters, loppers and handsaws (cut plants can be left on site). Cut stumps will then be treated immediately by applying an aquatic approved herbicide solution to the cut surface and cambium layer using backpack or hand sprayers. Glyphosate & methylated seed oil mix: The Department of Natural Resources recommends the use of glyphosate mixed with methylated seed oil (MSO) and an appropriate dye for cut-stump treatment in aquatic habitats. In any aquatic environment, approved aquatic formulas of glyphosate and dye must be used. Herbicide concentration is typically a 50% mixed solution. The lowest effective dose should be used in all circumstances. Vehicle Use: ATVs and other similar vehicles may be used to complete this work where permission is given by the project coordinator. Vehicles used must have low tracks/wheels that leave no ruts. If ruts are created the contractor will be responsible for repairing the damage. Additional material or other support from local Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource staff will be unavailable when conducting control actions on properties owned or managed by the Wisconsin DNR.
