Specifications include, but are not limited to: While the primary interest is the impact of contaminant exposures on SRKW, the focus of this assessment will be the indirect effect to SRKWs based on adverse impacts to organisms they depend on for prey. Two of the key stressors for SRKWs are direct contaminant exposure and food availability/quality. A key pathway for direct contaminant exposure by SRKWs is through the prey they consume. For some contaminants (e.g., polychlorinated biphenyls [PCBs]), SRKWs contain one of the highest reported contaminant levels in a marine mammal species. PCBs and other bioaccumulative contaminants (e.g., polybrominated diphenyl ethers [PBDEs], etc.) have been implicated in the poor survival and reproductive capacity of SRKWs. Contaminant exposure also plays a significant role in the survival of organisms in the food web that SRKWs depend on for prey.
