Summary The Pamunkey Indian Tribe requests the services of a preservation contractor to stabilize and restore two historic buildings on the Pamunkey Indian Reservation: a 1909 Schoolhouse, and a 1932 Pottery School. Schoolhouse The one room Schoolhouse was constructed in 1909. The exterior wood siding and trim have peeling paint, and there is a risk of water intrusion and rot. The masonry piers under the building are in poor condition and need to be restored, and the stairs and porch need structural repairs. Itemized needs are as follows: • Foundation: The masonry piers need repointing and restoration, and wood flooring joists inspected, repaired, and additional support added as needed. • Roof: Rafter tails need refinishing. • Chimney: Chimney needs to be repointed and capped if necessary, and flashing inspected and repaired as needed. • Windows: All windows need to be inspected, repaired, and refinished with historically appropriate materials as needed. Existing pulleys, weights, and other hardware are to be restored and reinstalled as practicable. Storm windows should be installed to protect the originals. • Doors: All doors need to be refinished or repaired with historically appropriate materials as needed. Existing knobs, hinges, locks, and other hardware are to be restored and reinstalled as practicable. • Siding: Wooden siding needs to be inspected, refinished or repaired with historically appropriate materials as needed. • Porch: Non-original stairs and railings are to be removed and replaced with wooden stairs to match the original corner stairs as closely as possible. Stairs and porch will be refinished and built to meet structural code requirements to ensure safe use of the space. • Interior: Damaged plaster and sheetrock need to be repaired, wooden surfaces need to be inspected, cleaned, and resealed as necessary. • Insulation: Insulation should be added between the floor joists and in the attic to aid in conditioning of the space.
