The Culpeper County Sheriff's Office desires to confirm the overall health of full-time prospective and current sworn CCSO employees through physical examination that includes but not limited to a battery of critically important tests by a certified and licensed physician. The fit for duty requirement projects an expectation for all deputies to live a disciplined and healthy lifestyle, while engaged in high stress and periods of sedentary work environment. The environmental, physical, and emotional conditions can change dramatically and be understood as part of the job description for a law enforcement public safety official. The CCSO employees approximately 121 sworn full-time(career) deputies that include the Sheriff, an elected constitutional officer and agency head. The expectation for deputy sheriffs, recognized as hazardous duty employees, requires a constant state of physical and mental readiness. The employees in this category are required to have physical examinations prior to any law enforcement basic or jail basic training. The initial physical examination provides a baseline of overall health for the conditional employee in the process of being hired. The annual or reoccurring physical will be required based on age and health concerns documented from previous physical examinations. Wellness for all deputies will be tracked at date of hire and continuously while serving in the sworn, career capacity. It is the desire of the County to have the selected firm(s) handle all new hire physicals and re-occurring physicals for each described employee to assess basic health and wellness. Testing shall additionally include drug and nicotine screens, chronic illnesses (i.e. diabetes, hypertension), and recommended adult immunizations, such as tetanus, hepatitis, and tuberculosis skin test.
