Specifications include, but are not limited to: The Virginia Department of Transportation (herein referred to as “VDOT”) is soliciting bids from qualified firms to provide fine granulated salt (sodium chloride) to be used for making brine that shall be delivered to various locations within the Staunton District for winter deicing operations. Granulated Industrial Bulk Salt products shall exhibit deicer qualities equal to or better than 95 percent Sodium Chloride at temperatures of minus 4 to minus 8 degrees C (25 to 18 degrees F) for standard temperature deicer or qualities equal to or better than 77 percent Calcium Chloride at temperatures of minus 17 to minus 23 degrees C (0 to minus 10 degrees F) for low temperature deicer. Solid snow and ice control materials without corrosion inhibitors shall conform to the following additional requirements. Sampling examining and testing shall be done according to ASTM D345 and E449 unless stated otherwise. a. Sodium chloride shall conform to the requirements of AASHTO M143, Type II b. Moisture content shall not exceed 2.0 percent. c. The sodium chloride will be tested according to Virginia Test Method VTM-28 and shall not be less than 95.0 percent sodium chloride. d. Samples of shipment of material will be taken at the final destination at the rate of approximately one composite (made from 3 increment samples) sample per 5,000 tons. If shipment is less than 5,000 tons only one composite sample is required. e. Shipping or delivery tickets shall indicate that the sodium chloride has been shipped from an approved source. This certification shall be stamped on the shipping or delivery tickets and shall be signed by an authorized representative of the company. Salt shall be delivered in a clean truck bed and shall be protected during transit with a waterproofcover. f. Anticaking agent: The quantity of the agent used shall be in the range of 0.1 to 0.2 pounds per ton. Contractor shall ensure a consistent through mix of the anti-caking agent throughout the truckload.
