Specifications include, but are not limited to: Post Harvest Mechanical Site Preparation – Trees to Cut - Cut ALL trees and shrubs, including mountain laurel and rhododendron, equal to or greater than 1.0 inch up to 6 inches DBH inside the unit boundaries. • Do not cut any ORANGE-banded trees in the unit. These are leave trees. • Do not cut any oak species, hickories, black walnut, red spruce or American Chestnut sprouts, unless they show damage from logging operations or display poor form. We will identify a few good examples at Pre-bid visit and at Pre-work meeting. • Areas inside streamside management zones (SMZs) designated on the ground with Blue bands are to be treated like the rest of the unit. • Do NOT cut any SMZ boundary trees delineated with BLUE bands. • Spring poles of any species are to be cut if they are 1.0” DBH as if they were upright. • Do Not cut dogwoods. • Advance oak regeneration is desired in these stands. • No trees displaying poor form or mechanical damage from logging operations should remain after completion of site preparation work. The boundaries of each unit are designated on the ground by 3 parallel slash marks painted in ORANGE facing into the unit with an ORANGE stump mark and roadway edges. Residual trees from the timber harvest are not to be damaged. Those trees will generally be 6 inches DBH and larger are designated on the ground with ORANGE bands. Cutting Methods: Trees shall be severed by chainsaw at a height not to exceed 6 inches from the ground. It is desired that trees be cut as close to ground level as possible. Ground level is considered from the up-hill side of the stump. Disposition of Felled Trees: Felled trees shall not be piled or windrowed but shall be left scattered throughout the area. Removal of the felled materials will be allowed where feasible. Any removal of material permitted will be for personal firewood use only. Vehicles will not be allowed inside the treatment area boundaries without prior approval.
