The Virginia Department of Forestry seeks a contractor to establish a cover crop to suppress weed growth and plant shortleaf pine bareroot seedlings to revitalize a riparian buffer/open field planting at a private residence in Cartersville, Cumberland County. Requirements: 1. If awarded, contractor will provide all materials, equipment and labor to complete this project. 2. Contractor will operate equipment in a safe and responsible manner. 3. Total area to seed and plant: 3 acres. 4. Timeframe: a. Phase 1 Timeframe – cover crop: Between August 15th and October 15th, 2025: 1. Prepare fields and plant cover crop. Bushhog and turn over fields (see light green secƟons below). Use a seed drill to plant red or crimson clover at a rate of 10 to 15 pounds per acre. b. Phase 2 Timeframe - planƟng: Between November 25th, 2025 and April 30th, 2026: 1. Scalp and plant shortleaf pine bareroot seedlings at a 10 x 10 spacing (435 TPA). Seedlings may be machine or hand planted. If hand planted a circular or square patch between 12” and 18” in diameter or per side should be scalped before planƟng. Small containerized seedlings are also acceptable.
