The Town of Lyndon will implement comprehensive pedestrian safety improvements along Depot Street, addressing critical safety concerns at four key crossing locations: the Main Street intersection, west and east of the Darling Inn senior housing, and the Broad Street intersection. Each location will receive a complete safety enhancement package consisting of a new highly visible crosswalk with curb extensions ("bump-outs") and pedestrian-scale decorative LED lighting upgrades which include the painting of existing poles along with matching decorative arms and LED lighting fixtures on Depot Street. These improvements strategically address documented safety challenges along this vital corridor, where heavy truck traƯic currently traverses a designated 25 mph zone, pedestrian visibility is sometimes compromised, key intersections lack adequate traƯic controls, and existing crosswalks present excessive crossing distances. The designed improvements will create safer connections between vital community destinations, including the Town Library, Darling Inn senior housing, and numerous local businesses. The enhancements directly respond to community priorities identified through the Better Connections program, where "safer crosswalks" and "attractive lighting" emerged as top desires in public surveys. Beyond immediate safety benefits, the project will support local businesses by creating natural "friction" to slow through-traƯic—a key stakeholder concern—while encouraging increased pedestrian activity through improved safety and aesthetics. The overall project has received preliminary approval from the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation (VDHP). The Town will work with the firm selected to refine a scope of work for the project that is within the budget allotted.
