Restoration of Historic Wood Doors A. Provide all the Door Restoration Work required to install a complete assembly in every way, including door removal, repair and/or faithful historical reconstruction or reproduction, reassembly, reinstallation, reconsolidation and reinforcing of frame, and weather sealing and recoating exterior surfaces; all existing building opening weather protection; and means and methods necessary to accomplish this work. Coordinate the Door Restoration Work with all the other trades for the project. Patch to match all adjacent surfaces that are disturbed, left exposed, or unfinished. All work of the contract is related. It is the Contractor’s responsibility to review all the Work for the entire project so that all the Work can be properly and completely performed by all trades. Provide all temporary structures and hardware necessary to maintain access and egress throughout the project. Coordinate sequencing with the City. B. Wood Door Restoration Work includes, but is not limited to providing all labor, materials, equipment, and services necessary to complete the restoration of the wood doors, as specified herein. a. Restore all components of existing wood doors, including frames, trim, panels, rails, weather-stripping and hardware. b. Restoration of historic wood doors consists of paint removal, consolidation and filling of deteriorated areas with specified epoxy material, appropriate Dutchman repairs, tightening of joints, priming, painting, weather-stripping, restoring hardware, and providing new hardware where necessary to make all the doors fully operable as required. c. Some existing operational hardware is expected to be unable to be repaired, in that case, provide new as specified, and ensure that all doors operate fully, freely and smoothly. d. Salvage, repair and retain historic hardware where reusable and as specified herein; replace any missing or inoperable hardware to match existing, or as specified herein. e. Install new weather-stripping at full perimeter of each door. f. Strip all paint from wood, and prep, prime and paint each door, including edges, in the shop. Paint must be dry before items are shipped. g. Door frames are to be restored in place. h. Daily clean-up of job site is required. Quality Assurance A. Maintain a steady work crew consisting of qualified craftspeople and a full time foreman who is a skilled craftsperson and has acceptable experience in wood door restoration. Confirm that all workers fully understand the requirements of the job. Allow for inspection of all work areas by the Owner’s Project Manager. B. “Skilled Craftsperson” is defined as an artisan trained in the conservation, reproduction and restoration of wood doors. The skilled craftsperson must have a minimum of ten years’ experience in restoration of wood doors on historic buildings.
