Multiple mature trees at the Riverton City main park need lateral weight reduction to improve branch and tree architecture. The objective is to reduce risk while leaving as large a tree as possible. Select and establish scaffold limbs by subordinating or removing competing stems or branches. Remove dead, damaged, diseased, and broken branches. Topping cuts and lion’s tailing are not allowed. When pruning to a lateral, the remaining lateral branch should be large enough to assume the terminal role. A rule of thumb is that the remaining branch should be at least ⅓ to ½ the diameter of the portion removed. Not more than 25 percent of the crown should be removed. Correct pruning for this tree will require climbing with ropes. Climbing spikes are not allowed. Any work done from a bucket truck will be minimal.
