Specifications include, but are not limited to: Design Build Services for the Virgin Islands State Historic Preservation Office’s Archaeological Storage, Laboratory and Museum, and Facility in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. The intent of this project is to renovate two historic houses in downtown historic Charlotte Amalie, Torvet Straede 1 and Kongens Gade 40, which are owned by the Virgin Islands Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR), for use by the Virgin Islands State Historic Preservation Office (VISHPO) for storage and curation of archaeological and historic resources and a museum facility. For many decades, Torvet Straede 1 and Kongens Gade 40 were the residences of some of St. Thomas’ most prominent families. This project is made possible from a financial contribution and the donation of the project buildings by the Gregers Malling-Holm Trust and the Hoffman Family Estate respectively to the Government of the Virgin Islands. In the recent past, Torvet Straede 1 served as an elegant fine dining restaurant, known as Parkside, while Kongens Gade 40 housed a preschool and nursery. Prior to his passing, Mr. Gregers Malling-Holm directed his Trust to engage in the worldwide trend of increasing and enhancing cultural tourism in the Virgin Islands. The establishment of this project will help in accomplishing part of Mr. Malling-Holm’s goal. Both donated structures are wood-framed and relatively small, having a vernacular style in accordance with urban residences of the mid to late 19th century in Charlotte Amalie. These wonderful structures are located within the Charlotte Amalie National Register Historic District. From their street locations, Torvet Straede 1 and Kongens Gade 40 might seem far apart, however, they are only separated by the southern portion of Kongens Gade 41 in their backyards. Currently, both buildings are vacant and have dramatically deteriorated physically since being donated to the government.
