A.) Construction Notes and Guidelines a. The contractor shall construct the two test installations (Single Slope Bridge Rail (Attachment 2) and Post & Beam Bridge Rail (Attachment 3) as per the drawings included with this bid packet. b. Construction specification for GFRP bars ACI SPEC-440.5 document shall be followed. Specifically, the contractor must understand proper storage, handling, and placement considerations specific to GFRP reinforcement. c. TTI will provide all GFRP bars at no cost to the contractor. d. All steel reinforcement to be provided by the contractor, except 3 steel bars with gauges (to be provided by TTI). e. The contractor shall coordinate with TTI when placing GFRP bars with strain gauges. There will be 30 GFRP bars with strain gauges and 3 steel bars with strain gauges. An instrumentation plan will be provided to the contractor indicating the exact location of the GFRP bars and steel with strain gauges. TTI will instrument the bars prior to construction of the barriers. For the post and beam bridge rail, instrumentation will be added at one end post and one interior post (Post 1 and Post 5). For the single slope bridge rail, instrumentation will be added at the end region (one location) and at one interior region. f. There will be two phases to the test installation construction. Phase I will consist of complete construction of both test installations. Testing will be conducted by TTI on both test installations after Phase I initial construction is completed. The testing is anticipated to be completed one month after Phase I construction is completed. Phase II construction will consist of repairing damaged areas in both test installations. Phase II repair construction will occur immediately after testing is completed. B.) Repair of Static Testing Areas a. Repair of the damaged areas will occur after testing (by TTI) is completed. b. TTI will provide repair details for specific locations once damage has been evaluated. For the purpose of this estimate package, a brief repair procedure is as follows and will apply to both test installations: i. Damaged portions of the barrier and the deck will be completely removed by saw-cutting through the sections. ii. The smooth saw cut areas shall be roughen with a mechanical/pneumatic hammer. iii. After roughening, a concrete bonding agent (to be specified later) shall be obtained by the contractor and applied to the roughened surface.
