Specifications include, but are not limited to: 1. Serve as the County Veterinarian, as required by SC State Law. 2. Inspect all animals at the Aiken County Animal Shelter (currently located at 411 Wire Road, Aiken, SC 29801) on a regular basis. These visits must occur during normal business hours (8:00 AM to 5:00 PM), Monday through Friday excluding the normal holiday schedule (New Year's Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and the Friday immediately following Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day). 3. Provide a recommendation for disposition, based on the inspection/assessment of temperament and physical condition, in writing on the available shelter forms for each animal. 4. Assess staff testing (feline leukemia, heartworm, fecal, vaccinations, etc.) and evaluations for potential adoptive animals. 5. Interpret medical records that may be acquired from other veterinarians that may be related to Animal Control investigations. 6. Assist, as may be necessary, with euthanasia certifications for County staff. 7. Maintain a Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Registration number for the County Shelter. Monitor and make recommendations for all recordkeeping concerning controlled substances. 8. Assist with cruelty investigations, evaluate malnourished and sick animals, conduct lab work, and perform autopsies on occasion. 9. Perform all spay and neutering surgeries for adoptive animals (we currently average 720 surgeries annually). Surgeries will be scheduled by Animal Shelter Staff and may become daily. Minor cosmetic and secondary surgery work may be requested by staff to enhance the opportunity for potential adoption of an animal this work is considered to be included in the cost of the sterilization procedure.
