Village of Elmsford joins the Empire State Purchasing Group

The Village of Elmsford has officially joined the Empire State Purchasing Group, one of bidnet direct’s regional e-procurement solutions, providing vendors throughout New York easy online access to its upcoming solicitations. The Village of Elmsford invites all vendors to register online at www.bidnetdirect.com/new-york/elmsfordny.

The regional purchasing group connects local governments with vendors looking to do business with public agencies. On the Empire State Purchasing Group, vendors seeking business with nearly 275 participating agencies can register online to gain access to a single point of entry for opportunities throughout New York. By posting upcoming bids and RFPs on the Empire State Purchasing Group, the Village of Elmsford ensures an entire community of vendors can view their solicitation, download documents, and receive notification of addenda. The vendors self-register and ensure their contact information is up to date.

“Because we aren’t the only agency posting and distributing bids, the Empire State Purchasing Group provides the Village of Elmsford more vendor competition, which we hope will help cut costs,” said Tony Capicotto, Village Engineer of the Village of Elmsford when asked why their department decided to join the Empire State Purchasing Group. “We also like that it saves on paper and can help our current vendors expand their business opportunities.”

The Village of Elmsford invites all local vendors to visit www.bidnetdirect.com/new-york/elmsfordny and register to receive access to its upcoming solicitations as well as the upcoming bids and RFPs from 275 other public agencies participating on the Empire State Purchasing Group. Registered vendors have the option to upgrade their service to receive customized bid alerts, notification of term contract expiration, and notification of a real-time addendum.

About the Village of Elmsford:

Elmsford is a village in Westchester County, New York. It is part of the New York metropolitan area. Roughly one mile square, the village is fully contained within the borders of the town of Greenburgh.

Elmsford was largely farmland throughout its early history. The construction of railroads in the late 19th century brought new prominence to the area, and in 1910 it was incorporated as a village.

The area was known from colonial times as "Storm's Bridge" and later, "Hall's Corners", names derived from the principal landowners of the times. In 1870, the growing village was officially renamed "Elmsford" in honor of a local landmark, a giant elm tree (since deceased). The names Elmsford and Storm's Bridge are reminders of the nearby Saw Mill River, which once had significant tributaries flowing through the village.

A longstanding legend holds that Elmsford is the birthplace of the term "cocktail". According to the tale, a local colonial tavern (sometimes said to be established by town father Isaac Storm) had run out of wooden stirrers during the war and started using the quills of roosters' tailfeathers to stir their drinks; a more embellished version holds that the roosters were plundered from nearby Tory farmers.

Much of Elmsford developed around the New York and Putnam Railroad station, with train service beginning in the 1870s. Commuter rail service ended in 1958, and freight service ended in 1975. The railroad bed is now the South County Trailway and North County Trailway. The train station building is now a restaurant.

The Elmsford Reformed Church and Cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
