The Department, has multiple programs that have a need to purchase Hemocue Hb 301 System Hemoglobin Analyzer and Hb 301 Microcuvettes to be used for hemoglobin testing. Federal Regulations for the WIC program (7 CFR 246.7(e)) requires hematological testing for all infants over nine months of age, children up to age five and women. The requirement to perform this testing on infants and young children makes it critical to perform the testing as quickly and efficiently as possible in order to minimize the distress this testing causes infants and children. The Hb 301 Hemoglobin Analyzers provide test results for hemoglobin levels in under three seconds and the microcuvettes have a longer shelf life than other systems. A faster turnover of obtaining hemoglobin data increases efficiency and is a factor in the quality of service the program is able to provide WIC families.
