Alabama Board of Optometry (herein referred to as the Board) licenses and regulates the practice of optometry and the provision of optometric devices in Alabama and operates under the authority of the Code of Alabama 1975, the practice of optometry and the use of therapeutic agents in said practice in the state of Alabama under the authority of Alabama Code § 34-22-1 et. seq. (The Optometry Act) The Board has been authorized by the Alabama Legislature to test and evaluate applicants for licensure, to issue licenses for practicing optometry and for the use of therapeutic agents, to set and maintain standards for continuing education, to maintain a list of all licensees, to respond to public requests for information regarding licensees, to investigate complaints against licensees, and to revoke, suspend, or fine licensees for the violations of the Optometry Act. It is the Board’s responsibility to establish standards for licensure in the practice optometry in the State of Alabama, thus serving the safety, health, and welfare of the public as well as the integrity of the profession. Those standards established by the Board are set forth in the license requirements, license renewal requirements, and the disciplinary procedures set by law for the practice of optometry in the State of Alabama. The Board currently licenses around 1,000 optometrists. The Board currently has seven members and meets approximately 5-6 times per year. It is the intent of the State of Alabama and the Board to solicit proposals for an Administrative Services Contract to provide administrative management, legislative monitoring, and logistical support services to the Board
