The mission of the New York City Department for the Aging (alternately referred to as “NYC Aging”) is to work to eliminate ageism and ensure the dignity and quality of life of approximately 1.8 million older New Yorkers, making up 20% of our city’s residents; this number is projected to grow to 1.86 million by 2040.2 The NYC Department for the Aging is deeply committed to helping older adults age in their homes and to creating a community-care approach3 that reflects a model age-inclusive city, helping aging New Yorkers avoid or delay institutional care while improving their quality of life, health, and safety. As an agency of the New York City government and an Area Agency on Aging under the federal Administration for Community Living (ACL), NYC Aging receives federal, state, and city funds to provide essential services for older adults, as well as referrals for services to people of all ages with disabilities.
