OGS has identified 379 trees on the ESP that must be pruned annually into a cubic topiary shape (herein known as “tree cubing”). This work is essential to maintain the Plaza’s iconic aesthetic, ensuring uniformity and geometric precision that align with its architectural design. By controlling canopy size, pruning mitigates overcrowding and reduces competition for light and resources among adjacent trees, promoting long-term health and structural integrity. Additionally, managing the trees’ upper growth directly correlates to root system regulation; limiting canopy expansion discourages aggressive root development, thereby preventing intermingling of root networks and safeguarding surrounding infrastructure, including walls and marble surfaces, from potential damage. Together, these efforts preserve the ESP’s visual aesthetics, protect its structural assets, and uphold safety standards for visitors.
