The project will make necessary repairs to restore the weather resistance, structural integrity, and historic integrity of the exterior walls and dome of the Academic Building. The cast stone masonry units will be repaired and selectively replaced to address corrosion-related damage while retaining original units that do not pose a meaningful risk of future degradation. Detailed requirements and careful qualification of the cast stone manufacturer will be required to ensure that the replacement units are aesthetically compatible with the units to remain. The cast stone and brick masonry will be flashed, repointed, and resealed to restore and improve the weather resistance of the mass masonry wall assembly. The existing copper roofing and cladding on the dome and the underlying mortar bed will be removed following installation of a temporary means of protection. The exposed original metal decking will be evaluated, then repaired and replaced as required to establish a reliable substrate. New nail able sheathing, new underlayment, and replicate copper roofing and cladding will be installed on the rehabilitated metal decking. Rehabilitation of the dome roof is expected to include repair or replacement of the skylight at the dome apex.
