1. Sulcata Tortoise and Kangaroo Habitat: The design in this area invites guests to participate in tortoise feeding experiences. Two yards in this space allow for mixed species between tortoises and kangaroos, and a separate yard for individuals who might choose a more secluded, less interactive resting space. A new heated holding building connected to the train barn provides winter viewing of tortoises and kangaroos. The indoor habitat will have adequate lighting, water, supplemental heat, extra electrical outlets and a keeper workspace. 2. Structural Upgrades to Train Tracks: Safety and reliability are the focus. The train track will remain in its current footprint. Still, plans include using new materials to reinforce the track, allowing it to withstand regular year-round use in Kansas's variable climate. A relocated train station serves as the first step of an upgraded train ride experience, allowing the Zoo to host guests aboard the Prairie Thunder at after-hours events. 3. Train loop animal habitats: The Zoo is currently restoring the natural prairie grasses and native pollinator plants along the train loop. This area will highlight the benefits of conserving native prairie plant species, as they provide food and homes for native pollinators and North American songbirds. To further enhance the train experience and support the Zoo’s conservation initiatives, this area aims to aid endangered grassland species. Species prioritized for these habitats include Mexican wolf, Chacoan Peccary, and Pronghorn. The habitats will all have adjacent shelters with adequate lighting, drainage, water, supplemental heat for peccaries, extra electrical outlets, a keeper workspace in one of the barns, and tool storage. Guests will be able to access this new conservation-focused area via the train, with a small train station included for special experiences.
