The New Hanover County Department of Recycling and Solid Waste (County) desires to reduce the amount of waste placed into the New Hanover County (NHC) Landfill. It has been determined that a large percentage of waste brought to the landfill consists of waste produced by construction and demolition (C&D) activities and yard waste/vegetative debris. Vegetative waste is best defined as yard waste, including stumps, trees, limbs, brush, grass, and wood waste. Wood waste is defined as clean, un-treated, dimensional lumber, engineered wood, and wood pallets. In order to recycle that portion of the waste stream, certain processing is necessary. The following scope of services has been developed for the grinding and off-site marketing of clean, unpainted, untreated sorted wood waste and grinding of yard waste/vegetative debris at the New Hanover County Landfill for internal use. Approximately 100 tons of ground vegetative waste will be “double ground” for use in the County’s onside compost operation during each grinding event. Additionally, treated lumber may be ground for onsite use. County’s Responsibilities: 1. NHC Landfill staff will sort wood waste based upon Contractor’s specifications. Current projections for the approximate annual volume of material to be recycled by material type: Material to be Recycled Estimated Annual Volume Clean Dimensional Lumber Approximately 2,000 tons Clean Engineered Wood Approximately 2,000 tons Wood Pallets Approximately 3,000 tons Yard Debris (Vegetative Waste) Approximately 8,000 tons Note: these are estimates based upon projected growth, however the material to be transported for processing may be more or less than the amounts shown above.
