ANNUAL CYCLICAL PRUNING PROGRAM The objective of this tree pruning operation is to manage risk and provide for clearance in public spaces. Pruning will be done in accordance with latest revision of standards of the International Society of Arboriculture’s Best Management Practices – Tree Pruning and ANSI A300. The City Forester will establish objectives prior to the beginning of any operation. At a minimum, this may include cleaning and raising of established trees, specialty pruning of young trees, and restoration of damaged trees. Areas to be pruned and a list of trees will be provided to the Contractor. Prior to the pruning of any parkway tree during the cycle pruning program, the City will distribute to each home adjacent to the parkway tree a post-card explaining the pruning operations that will be accomplished. The Cyclical Pruning Program will be accomplished within the following specifications: A. Crown Cleaning 1. All dead, diseased, dying, broken, decayed, or damaged limbs shall be removed. 2. Water sprouts and/or suckers growing on the main trunk shall be removed from the ground level up to the lowest crotch. 3. Remove one of two or more crossed and/or rubbing branches greater than ½” in diameter where practicable. B. Crown Raising 1. Trees impeding vehicle or pedestrian traffic shall be raised and/or tipped back to at least 14 feet over streets and 8 feet over sidewalks. The tree should be balanced evenly. 2. Where practicable, remove lower branches from trees that are over twelve (12) feet tall so that the lowest crotch is at least six (6) feet above the ground. C. Clearance 1. Trees obstructing control devices (stop signs, yield signs, and traffic lights) should be pruned to allow for adequate visibility.
