Cull Tree Control: DOF-provided plans will include the following items: 1. Landowner Objectives 2. Species and stem quality of the cull tree(s) 3. Total basal area or trees per acre of cull trees 4. Any special instructions or considerations 5. Map delineating boundary of treatment area, estimated acreage, landowner name, and contact information; Treatment Methods: Identify and treat cull trees at the prescribed rate in the stand, normally up to 20% of the basal area of the stand. Cull trees will be the worst quality trees per the landowner’s objectives. They will usually be in the canopy as intermediate, co-dominant, or dominant crown classes. The maximum tree size for cull tree removal treatments shall be no larger than twelve (12) inches in dbh. The maximum amount to treat in a tract will be 20% of the tract basal area. The number of trees per acre will vary with the tract but will be indicated by the DOF forester in each plan. The Contractor can expect to treat 20 to 50 trees per acre for each tract, depending upon the recommendation provided by the DOF forester. Trees to treat will be in the upper mid-story or canopy. Tree composition may include pulpwood or pole size (four (4) to eleven (11) inches in average dbh) or sawtimber size (greater than eleven (11) inches in average dbh. Regardless of tract size class, twelve (12) inches in dbh will be the maximum tree size to treat. Stumps shall be cut as low as possible, but no more than 12 inches high on the uphill side.
