The project entails conducting a flood modeling analysis to identify preferred alternatives and areas suitable for floodplain restoration along the Gihon River in Johnson near three primary buyout sites, the former Union Bank, Sterling Market, and Johnson Heath Center properties. Flood modeling would focus along the Gihon River between the Route 15 bridge and the confluence with the Lamoille River. This would also include exploring floodplain restoration alternatives near the outfall of the culvert behind the former Johnson Public Library as well as surrounding areas. These areas where floodplain restoration opportunities will be explored are just upstream of the confluence of the Gihon and Lamoille Rivers. This is the first step in addressing a key aspect of Johnson’s vulnerability to intense flooding events. The Village of Johnson experienced devastating flooding during the July 2023 flood. Floodplain restoration alternatives explored should increase flood storage capacity and floodplain access to reduce future flooding impacts in Johnson Village.
