The City of Austin seeks information from qualified vendors regarding an AI-powered multilingual interpretation tool. This is part of the City’s broader effort to enhance language access for Austinites with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) in alignment with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. According to the U.S. Census and American Community Survey, 25% of Austin residents speak Spanish, and over 80 languages are spoken in the Austin area. As part of our continued commitment to language access, we are exploring technology-based solutions to help City departments, Boards, and Commissions provide real-time multilingual support for meetings and events, both virtual and in-person. This RFI will help the City gather information for a potential pilot program. The pilot would run for approximately four months, with the option to extend based on evaluation results. The goal is to assess system performance, ease of integration, and suitability for long-term use.
