The Reid Elementary School Bus Loop Expansion project is being proposed to provide additional bus storage along Whitehead Road north of the intersection with Daytona Drive. Under existing conditions the project area has a mix of newly planted trees which will be removed and relocated elsewhere on the school property by RPS Staff or designee. The remainder of the site is open space which contains extensive underground utilities along with overhead electric power lines and associated poles that will remain in place over the course of the project, the vertical location of the underground utilities have not been identified, it is the contractors responsibility to test pit and ensure the locations are not in conflict with the proposed improvements. The proposed improvements will preserve the existing portions of the bus loop outside of the limits of disturbance and provide for an additional 210 feet of bus storage. The proposed bus loop width will match the existing travel way width of 24 feet with a proposed 6’ wide concrete sidewalk along the pickup\drop off side of the bus loop. The bus loop is designed for one-way operation with buses entering at the southern entrance and exiting the school at the northern entrance onto Whitehead Rd. Existing directional signage located at the northern entrance will be preserved, prohibiting ingress to the school at the northern entrance. In addition to the proposed bus loop expansion, the existing entrance will be closed and proposed drainage improvements will be constructed to convey upstream storm runoff safely to the existing manmade storm sewer system at the corner of Whitehead Road and Daytona Drive. All improvements have been designed to adhere to City of Richmond and\or VDOT Standards and Specifications. It is anticipated that a DPW Work-In-Street Permit and DPU RESMP Permit will be required for this project.
