Police Service Dog Specifications: Age: The canine must be between twelve (12) months and thirty (30) months in age. Breed: German Shepherd, Belgium Malinois or Dutch Shepherd Sex: The canine may be either male or female. Weight: The canine’s height, weight, and build must be proportionate. Canine Candidates: The canine will be untrained (Green) Shall display the ability to be trained as a dual purpose canine Dual purpose canine is defined as the following: “a police dog that is trained for multiple tasks, typically patrol duties and detection (narcotics or explosives). They combine the roles of a patrol dog (tracking, protection and apprehension) with the abilities of a detection canine. The canine must be guaranteed against any congenital abnormalities. If the canine is found to have any physical, mental, or social abnormalities, the canine will not be accepted. Shall not exhibit sensitivity or fear when in enclosed buildings with slick floors, dark rooms, stairs, loud noises, or other distracting features. Shall not be jumpy, shy, afraid, nervous around people, show aggression toward handlers or be unable to work around people. The canine must have a stable temperament, bonding with the handler. The canine must exhibit the desire to vigorously hunt and retrieve any object thrown, wherever the object is thrown. Shall display adequate amount of excitement once a toy is located. Shall not show adverse reactions to riding in a motor vehicle. Shall display civil aggression and display a good, sure, full mouth apprehension on an exposed bite sleeve or other bite equipment. Shall display both prey and defense drives and make an apprehension under gunfire. Shall complete apprehensions in both interior and exterior location and must not show fear of slippery floors.
