The FMA seeks to create a sustainable, beautiful, accessible, unified, and animated public space and premiere national destination. The CLAP will build upon previous planning exercises, adhere to established Governing Documents, and aim high in aspiration and design principles that create a world-class public landscape. The FMA intends for the site to elevate Fort Monroe’s presence as an iconic, well-cared for, well-loved, and celebrated Virginia landscape. The following goals are to be achieved in the planning and implementation process: • Create an iconic public place and landscape. • Elevate safety for guests, and protection for amenities and resources, into all design moves. • Focus landscape interventions to achieve a level of “wow” for guests centered on Fort Monroe’s significant cultural landmarks, history, heritage, ecology, and new additions. • Provide a region-shaping public landscape that is full of life and vitality. A Fort Monroe that is approachable, accessible, beautiful, and timeless.
