Single Tree Selection (Payment Units 1-14) – Selectively thin hardwoods to 70-90 square feet of basal area. Favor oak, hemlock, white pine and cedar where present. Oak should be released on 3 sides to an average BA of 60 sq ft. Where 30 sq ft or more of hemlock occur, thin to less than 100 sq ft of BA. Around areas of heavy hemlock, open up the drip edge to encourage hemlock seedling establishment. 1) Mark trees to be cut (blue/teal paint). Favor the best future crop trees in place, regardless of species. Payment Units 9, 12 and 13 are to be marked with teal paint. Payment Units 1-8, 10, 11 and 14 are to be marked with blue paint. 2) Leave den and nest trees. 3) The objective is an all age stand structure with a max diameter of 18” DBH in hardwood stands. 4) Retain all hemlock, cedar and pine unless removal is needed for operability. Oak should be favored where present, but can be marked if it makes up a significant portion of the BA, or if the tree has a high risk of mortality. 5) Where there is 30 sq ft or more of hemlock, thin to less than 100 sq ft of basal area. Around areas of heavy hemlock, open the drip edge to encourage hemlock seedling establishment. 6) Release oak on three sides to a residual BA of 60 sq ft. Favor mast producing black cherry. 7) Further guidance will be discussed at presale meeting. 8) Selectively thin hardwoods to 70-90 sq ft of BA. Favor to leave: oak, hemlock, mast producing black cherry, white pine, red pine and cedar. Follow the guidelines set forth in “The Complete Marker”. Red Pine Thinning (Payment Unit 15) – Selectively thin red pine to 70-90 square feet of basal area, focusing on the lowest quality stems for removal. Favor oak, hemlock, white pine and cedar where present. All merchantable mixed species not listed above are to be marked at breast height for harvest. 1) Mark trees to be cut with blue paint. Favor the best future crop trees in place, regardless of species. 2) Leave den and nest trees. 3) Continue developing understory diversity by thinning. 4) Retain all oak, hemlock, white pine and cedar unless needed for operability. 5) Further guidance will be discussed at presale meeting.
