(a) The Contractor shall consult with Forest Service personnel prior to initiating field work for the purpose of: (1) reviewing the undertakings (2) reviewing Forest Service cultural resource inventory information (3) examining pertinent natural resource data, reports, maps, including compartment (timber type) maps (4) discussing field plans and coordination with the Forest Service (5) becoming acquainted with the natural and cultural features of the project area. (6) and must submit an Application for Permit for Archeological Investigation (FS-2700-32) and obtain a Permit for Archeological Investigations (ARPA permit), prior to starting field work on federal surface. (b) With regard to historic sites, emphasis for all items will be placed on using the results of archival and informant data searches to identify previously recorded or reported cultural resources within the project areas. Sources shall include: (1) Forest Service inventory information, which includes a site file and atlas (2) historic and modern aerial photos and remote sensing imagery (3) National Register of Historic Places (4) State Historic Preservation Officer (5) informants, including local residents and Forest Service District personnel (6) and historic cruise books and maps, as well as GLO survey notes and maps. (c) Heritage/Archeological resources identification survey on the on the Huron Manistee National Forest (HMNF) shall consist of walk-over coverage, supplemented with systematic shovel testing. Project areas will be designated as Low, Moderate, or High probability for prehistoric/precontact cultural resources.
