University of Wisconsin-Platteville’s 430-acre Pioneer Farm is located approximately 6 miles southeast of the main campus. The Farm serves as a vital asset for the hands-on laboratory need of students enrolled in the School of Agriculture, which is part of the College of Business, Industry, Life Science and Agriculture (BILSA). The Beef Facility, located on the Pioneer Farm, has housed the university’s beef herd and served as the Wisconsin Beef Improvement Association (WBIA) bull test station since it was built in 1969. This Facility provides educational, research and outreach opportunities while also generating annual revenue from the beef herd and bull test. This Project will provide design-build services to complete the following: Raze and remove three (3) linearly connected 1960’s-era beef holding buildings totaling 9,984 GSF: (3068A) Beef Holding (Housing) 6,912 GSF (1969), has 6 concrete lots. (3068B) Beef Holding (Housing) (north) 1,536 GSF (1969), has 1 concrete lot. (3068C) Beef Holding (Housing) Addition 1,536 GSF (1981), has 1 concrete lot. Plan, design, and construct one new agricultural-style beef holding building of 14,592 GSF (approx. size 48’ W x 304’ L x 14’ ICH). The new building will be sited in the footprint of the three razed buildings, with the existing concrete feed lots remaining to continue serving as feed lots. (Refer to Exhibit 1_Beef Buildings Replacement_A1_PLAN for preliminary plans.) This Project will raze and remove the three buildings from concrete lots 1 through 8, currently used for housing cattle, and replace them with one taller structure with 14 feet clear head height, without solid dividers, which will improve the air flow and air quality for cattle. Additionally, this Project will add a 12-foot alley, under roof, on the back (west) side of the building to serve as a drive alley for equipment and a second drover’s (cattle driving) alley for moving cattle into the handling facility. The Project will also add roofing to cover the area between Beef Housing #3068B and the Beef Feed building #3069 to replace cattle loafing space. The overall footprint will only add approximately an additional 4,608 sq. ft. of roof, draining away from the facilities. No concrete pours are anticipated, as the lots would remain the same. No extension of utility services to the barn is anticipated. Existing plumbing is to remain. Existing electrical service is anticipated to be adequate for the Project.
