1 SURFACE PREPARATION Cleaning: The asphalt surface must be thoroughly cleaned using power blowers, sweepers, or wire brushes to remove dirt, debris, oil, and grease. Oil Spot Treatment: Oil and grease stains must be treated with an oil primer/sealer. Crack Filling: Cracks greater than ¼ inch shall be filled with hot-applied crack filler or rubberized asphalt crack sealer. 2.2 MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS Seal Coat Type: A coal tar-based or asphalt emulsion-based sealant per ASTM D5727 (for coal tar) or ASTM D977 (for asphalt emulsion). Mix Design: The sealer should be mixed per manufacturer’s recommendations, typically including sand for traction and durability. Application Rate: Apply at a rate of 0.12 – 0.15 gallons per square yard per coat. Curing Time: Allow a minimum of 24-48 hours before allowing vehicle traffic.
