The design of civil engineering projects requires a thorough evaluation of subsurface conditions, possible geologic hazards, and gives recommendations for foundation designs at proposed project sites. When projects require earthen or rock fill materials, a determination must be made as to the suitability of materials to receive fill, and an evaluation of possible source material for the construction. On projects where excavation of existing materials is to be made, an evaluation of the stability of the remaining materials, soil strength properties, and mitigation of any instabilities may also be required. Geotechnical evaluations typically involve the review of existing information, field exploration, recommendations for laboratory analytical testing of materials, geologic and geotechnical evaluation, geotechnical recommendations, and preparation of geotechnical reports. These evaluations will support the design and construction of roadways, foundations, and other structures
