The General Services Department is seeking proposals for a Tree Canopy Assessment with the most qualified vendor. Durham, NC covers approximately 116 square miles. The trees in the City of Durham provide many benefits in the form of shade for cooling and reduced energy consumption, reduction of air pollutants, stormwater regulation, water quality improvement, increases in property value, and aesthetics linked to mental and physical health, but there are costs associated with their maintenance and management, and they present liability as they age and die in densely populated areas. Funding for this project provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Urban and Community Forestry Program. The City of Durham is an equal opportunity provider. This contract will supply canopy coverage data for the entire land base of the City of Durham (including the Urban Growth Boundary and Future Growth Areas as defined in the City of Durham’s City-County Comprehensive Plan), as understood by the measures of tree location, and canopy area. At the close of the contract, the contractor will provide GIS data with metadata, an assessment spreadsheet, and maps of existing and possible planting area data, focusing on block segments in city rights-of-way.
