The State of Hawai‘i Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) is seeking proposals for a comprehensive Wildland Fire Management Plan and associated Environmental Assessment prepared in compliance with Hawaii State Statues (HRS) 343D and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) for the state lands of Nāpuʻu, North Kona, Hawaii Island. The lands of Nāpuʻu are comprised of the Pu’u Wa’awa’a Forest Reserve, the Pu’u Wa’awa’a Forest Bird Sanctuary (3-7-1-001-007), and the Pu’u Anahulu Game Management Area (TMK 3-7-1-003-001, 3- 7-1-004-001, 3-7-1-004-018, 3-7-1-001-001, 3-7-1-001-004, 3-7-1-001-006, 3-7-1-001-007, 3-7-1-002- 001, 3-7-1-002-013).The Wildland Fire Management Plan focuses on mitigating wildfire risks that threaten nearby communities as well as natural and cultural resources (endangered species, existing forests, wildlife, and areas of cultural significance) in and around state lands through effective vegetation management, particularly targeting invasive grasses and other fire-prone species. The Plan will include inventory and recommendations for expansion/maintenance of the existing fire fuel break network and infrastructure, investigating the feasibility of strategic prescribed burns and grazing, and enhancing fire pre-suppression actions.
