The initial scope of work includes Advance Planning for the renovation of and addition to the Fetzer Hall complex to accommodate the programmatic needs of a new Carolina Student Recreation and Wellbeing Center. Upon successful completion of the Advanced Planning phase, it is anticipated that the University will contract the selected team for full design services to include the design and construction of the proposed project. The Carolina Student Recreation and Wellbeing Center has been conceived to provide equitable and centralized access to health and wellbeing resources, address the lack of indoor recreational space for students on campus, and house aspects of the following departments for a more integrated, collaborative approach to student development and support: Campus Recreation, Dean of Students, Student Affairs, Student Wellness, and Violence Prevention and Advocacy Services. Additional program areas within the existing facility, including those occupied by Carolina Athletics and the Department of Exercise and Sports Science (EXSS) may also be assessed as part of the planning effort and, potentially, incorporated within the project area. It is anticipated that the design will utilize and expand upon the existing footprint to renovate the current facility and build out a new Carolina Student Recreation and Wellbeing Center to accomplish the following goals, amongst others: • Provide a best-in-class student recreation facility, allowing UNC-Chapel Hill (UNC) to meet the 25% increased demand in indoor facilities usage since 2019 and expand our program, equipment, and class offerings. • Create student-centered spaces and office suites that allow for the holistic integration of UNC’s non-clinical wellbeing resources and student success/support teams. • Offer increased staffing and resources for the Dean of Students team, to respond to a significant increase in the demand for critical student support and case management since 2019. • Create a centralized location for the newly developed Violence Prevention and Advocacy Services team.
