● Provide high-quality direct language instruction for EMLs demonstrating ELP levels 1-4. ● Provide culturally and linguistically sustaining materials that reflect the diverse backgrounds of MCPS students, supporting our top languages: Spanish, Amharic, French, Portuguese, Chinese (Mandarin), Dari, Pashto, Japanese, Russian, and Vietnamese. ● Offer both paper and electronic options to ensure flexibility and accessibility for all students. ● Align with the WIDA 2020 Framework to support language development across various content areas, including Language for Social Instructional Language, Language for Language Arts, Language for Mathematics, Language for Science, and Language for Social Studies ● Incorporates aspects of the WIDA Framework such as two Modes of Communication and their constituent 4 domains, Key Language Uses, Proficiency Level Descriptors, Language Expectations, and Language Features. ● Include resources specifically designed to support Newcomers to English-speaking U.S. schools. ● Engage teaching professionals, caregivers, and fellow students in supporting the language development of EMLs. ● Provide interim assessments that can be used to measure language development proficiency throughout the school year that can be automatically linked with MCPS data systems.
