The Public Building Commission of Chicago (PBC) along with its partner at the Chicago Park District (“CPD”), and the Aldermanic Offices of the 27th Ward, are embarking on delivering the construction of a new Fieldhouse along with site development. The subject property will be an extension of the existing Kells (George) Park and be integrated into existing CPD operations. The proposed single-story +/-13,800 SF Fieldhouse will include a Two-Position High School sized Large Gymnasium with retractable bleachers for spectators for activities such as basketball, volleyball, divider curtain, and required storage. Also included are two multi-purpose clubrooms for Chicago Park District activities with a dividable partition and storage, vestibule/lobby/reception area, pantry and vending, an administrative office, and public restrooms for men’s, women’s and all-gender. The building will be constructed using steel framing and a masonry veneer exterior. The fenestration of glazing at the lobby entrance, gymnasium and multipurpose room will allow great visibility into the park and generous daylight into the main building spaces. The Fieldhouse will be designed to achieve minimum LEED v4/v4.1 Silver Certification as defined by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The project will maximize efficiency with the use of natural light, and a mechanical system and building designed to reduce energy consumption while providing a comfortable environment for Fieldhouse activities. Potable water use will be reduced through plumbing fixture selection and native and adaptive plantings in the landscaping immediately surrounding the Fieldhouse. It will be designed to align with current code and ordinance, including the Chicago Sustainable Development Policy (SDP) (enacted in 2024) and the Energy Transformation Code (ETC) and Stormwater Ordinance, as well as the LEED Silver minimum requirement. Sustainable Development Policy (SDP) Matrix strategies are to include Bird Protection and Exceed Energy Transformation Code by 10%.
