DNA Extraction from Skeletal Remains or other Forensic Evidentiary Items • DNA extraction of pulverized bone sample skeletal remains or other forensic evidentiary items must be performed using QIAGEN EZ1/2 DNA Investigator chemistry • If the sample material is bone, the bone shall be cleaned prior to extraction to minimize contamination. • Two samples of bone material (~200 mg each) shall be collected. • The second pulverized bone sample shall be returned to the Mississippi Forensics Laboratory (MSFL) for storage; the weight of the sample returned shall be documented and provided to the laboratory upon completion • One half (1/2) of the any other forensic evidentiary item may be tested; the other ½ must be returned to the MSFL. • Detailed descriptions of how much of the items were tested must be included in the case notes. • Reagent blanks must be processed with the samples during DNA extraction. • If a DNA extract is submitted for typing, the vendor laboratory must begin processing by quantification of the sample prior to downstream processes. • The vendor must have detailed DNA extraction procedures available for review. • The vendor must have specialized processing techniques for swabbing and processing swabs for contact DNA from firearms...
