This task includes conducting a project specific Phase I Archaeological Investigation to determine the potential the project has to affect significant cultural resources. All work must be accomplished in accordance with guidelines for historic preservation and archaeology projects issued by the New Jersey Historic Preservation Office and in compliance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines for Archeology and Historic Preservation. The Consultant will review historic maps, archival materials, and prior studies relevant to the Assunpink Greenway while identifying documented archaeological and historic sites within the Area of Potential Effects (APE). Additional research will include interviews with local historians and archaeologists. A site inspection will assess environmental conditions, past land modifications, and potential archaeological resources, including a pedestrian survey to identify surface evidence. Areas requiring further subsurface testing will be noted, and findings will be documented with photographs and field notes. Please note that the sites have known and suspect soil and groundwater impacts. Soil and groundwater disturbance, if required, will need to be coordinated in advance with the Licensed Site Remediation Professional (LSRP) for each property. Collected data will be analyzed to determine the presence, integrity, and significance of any cultural materials. The Consultant will classify artifacts, if applicable, and assess the potential impact of the project on identified resources. A final report will summarize research, field methods, findings, and recommendations for further investigations if necessary, including relevant maps and photographs. Please note this Phase IA survey does not include subsurface testing but will determine if there are areas of sensitivity withing the project area that merit testing based on sensitivity and the potential of being impacted by project activities.
