Reading Intervention Program will include the following: Print-based program reading instructional materials/programs for students in grades 6th – 12th for students reading below grade level at the six (6) middle schools, Brewster, five (5) high schools and the Edinburg Alternative Center. Assessment screening to determine if the intervention is needed, and specific placement tests for different entry points. Assessment is aligned with learning objectives. Pre-Assessment is included to appropriately differentiate instruction for students. Post-Assessment is included at the end of the year and measures growth effectively. Monitors student’s progress including time on task and constantly graphs progress. Teacher reports are comprehensive by individual student and groups of students. Documented alignment to Texas Essential Knowledge Skills (TEKS) and the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS). Program is systemic and structured, sequential, incremental, and cumulative. It allows the student to have continuous feedback and positive reinforcement. Includes tools that build strong literacy foundations and help remediate the reading skills of middle and high school students. Provides guidance to teachers on how to use assessment information to plan and differentiate instruction to include mechanisms for timely feedback. Explicitly teaches comprehension strategies with the aid of carefully designed examples and practice. This includes careful modeling, scaffolding, and application. Starts with the earlier prerequisite basic comprehension skills and strategies and builds to more complex skills and strategies with emphasis on informational text and text organization. Cumulatively builds a repertoire of skills and strategies that are applied and integrated with appropriate texts for authentic purposes over the course of the year. Reading selections, including those read to students and those students read, are of high quality, interesting, motivational, culturally responsive and age appropriate for students. The program accommodates a variety of interests, abilities, and learning styles; it is appropriate for individual and group instruction. Learners are actively engaged, motivated and receive immediate feedback. Program allows for the personalization of instruction for each student. Program must include STAAR/EOC prep materials that simulate most up-to-date version of Texas state assessments (i.e. STAAR 2.0).
