1. Stream banks a. No land maintenance activities shall occur with a buffer zone, unless specified elsewhere in this document, following these guidelines: Stream Width Buffer Zone (minimum) Less than 20 feet 50 feet per side 20 feet to 40 feet 75 feet per side More than 40 feet 200 feet per side b. Notify LES Environmental Department if contract work will affect stream banks, specific work practices or permit requirements from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers may apply. c. Chemical applications along stream banks will require: i. An LES form 929 (Daily Chemical Report) shall be submitted after each application. ii. Proper licensure and certification by the applicator iii. Use only products specifically approved for aquatic uses by both the EPA and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln County Extension Service. 2. Wetlands a. Herbicide Application i. An LES form 929 (Daily Chemical Report) shall be submitted after each application. ii. Selective low-volume foliar application; injection and cut-surface application are the only methods of herbicide application appropriate at (or near) water crossings and wetlands. iii. Herbicides work better when used at higher temperatures. Foliar herbicides must be applied during a rain-free period to be effective. Under all circumstances, herbicides should be sprayed wind does not exceed 10 mph in order to minimize drift. iv. Use only products specifically approved for aquatic uses by both the EPA and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln County Extension Service. i. The EPA approval will be present on the product label, the UNL County Extension approval is for Garlon 3A. 3. Saline Wetlands- Salt Creek Tiger Beetle Habitat (between approximately 20th and 27th Streets and generally south of what would be McKelvie Road and north of Arbor Road) a. Lighting i. Avoid impacting the Salt Creek tiger beetle with artificial light sources, it is recommended that beginning with May 15th through the end of July construction begin at least 30 minutes after sunrise and end 30 minutes before sunset. ii. lf security lighting is necessary, downward shields should be used to direct light to the ground and sodium vapor lighting should be used, as this is less attractive to Salt Creek tiger beetles. b. Sediment control i. Avoid storing materials or driving machinery on/through salt flats, saline wetland areas, and streams in the saline wetland area. Keep vehicles a sufficient distance away from bank edges to prevent increased erosion. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will assist LES and it Contractors to avoid these areas by "roping off' or otherwise indicating the areas to avoid. When the right-of-way maintenance is complete, LES will have the contractor remove any field markers that are no longer necessary. ii. Use appropriate measures to prevent sediment transport and deposition into Little Salt Creek during and after construction. iii. Refueling of vehicles and equipment should be done away from saline wetland habitats and should not employ "topping off' of tanks. A spill kit should be immediately accessible. c. Herbicide Application i. If herbicides are necessary to maintain the right-of-way corridor, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission must be consulted prior to any applications. The use of Garlon 3 has been pre –approved for use. d. Pesticide Application i. Refrain from using pesticides to maintain the power line corridor. e. Mechanical Woody Vegetation Removal i. As used here, the term mechanical means cutting, sawing, clipping, mowing, and uprooting to remove woody vegetation. ii. Notify LES Environmental Department if this activity will occur, A Swampbuster or permit 404 may be required.
